Helpful Tips

Get more out of your mulch

A few things that help mulch do its job and keep your trees and beds healthy.

About 2 to 3 inches deep

A layer about 2 to 3 inches deep holds moisture in the soil and blocks weeds. Less than that and weeds push through; more than that and roots can suffocate.

Keep mulch off tree trunks

Pull mulch back a few inches from tree trunks and never pile it against the bark. Bark that stays wet can rot and invite pests. Leave a small gap at the base.

Refresh when old mulch breaks down

Refresh beds once old mulch has broken down into a fine, dark layer. A thin top-up is usually enough — you don't need to remove what's already there.

“He is knowledgeable about lawn care and gave me advice of what needed to be done bc it is a newly established lawn.”

Questions

Mulching FAQ

How deep should mulch be?

A layer about 2 to 3 inches deep holds moisture and blocks weeds. Less than that lets weeds through; more than that can smother roots. Austin spreads an even, consistent layer.

Why not pile mulch around trees?

Mulch piled against the bark keeps it wet, which can rot the trunk and invite pests. Keep mulch pulled back a few inches from tree trunks and never mound it against the bark.

When is a good time to mulch?

Refresh beds once old mulch has broken down into a fine, dark layer. A thin top-up is usually enough — you don't need to remove what's already there.

Can you mulch and mow on the same visit?

Ask Austin when you call. He'll tell you straight whether both can be done in one visit for your yard.
